Jaspreet Singh’s Record Breaking Incredible Journey: Gatka at Mount Everest Base Camp
A proud moment for Akal Academy Moonak and the entire Sikh community as Jaspreet Singh, a student of the Akal Academy, has achieved a historic feat. He is part of the first young team to perform Gatka, the traditional Sikh martial art, at the Mt. Everest Base Camp. This remarkable accomplishment has earned him a prestigious place in both the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records.
Jaspreet Singh hails from the village of Ghamurghat, Punjab, and comes from a humble background. His father serves as a Granthi Singh in the local Gurdwara Sahib, and his mother is a housewife. Despite financial challenges, Jaspreet has been able to pursue his studies at Akal Academy Moonak thanks to the "Educate to Save" initiative by The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib. This initiative supports children from underprivileged families who might otherwise be deprived of education, helping them realize their dreams to the fullest.
The journey to Mt. Everest Base Camp was no small feat. Jaspreet and his team undertook a challenging 75-kilometer trek to reach the base camp. Along the way, they encountered harsh weather conditions and other obstacles, but with unwavering dedication and faith, they persevered.
Jaspreet’s achievement reflects not only his own determination but also the values of resilience and discipline instilled by Akal Academy Moonak. It stands as a testament to the potential of students when given the right opportunities and support. The entire Akal Academy family congratulates Jaspreet on his incredible accomplishment and wishes him the best for his future endeavors.
This milestone is a proud moment for Akal Academy Moonak, The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib, and all those who support the "Educate to Save" initiative. Jaspreet’s journey is a beacon of hope for countless children from underprivileged backgrounds, proving that with the right guidance and blessings, they too can achieve greatness.
What is Gatka and its Significance
Gatka is an integral part of Sikh Martial Arts being taught in our Akal Academies.
Many of our students have achieved awards at different levels in Gatka.
It originated when the Sixth Master of Sikhs, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, adopted ‘Kirpan’ for self-defense during the Mughal era. The tenth Guru, Gobind Singh Ji, made it compulsory for everyone to use weapons for self-defense.
